Recently Patrick and I viewed the new Mel Gibson movie, The Passion of the Christ.
It was one of the most powerful films I have ever experienced and among the more important.
It is indescribable by words.
There is simply some art that has such layers of meaning that it must be experienced rather than summarized with words to grasp the truth of its expression. I felt this way after seeing a number of movies over the last several years, including The Lord of the Rings movies, Signs, They Were Soldiers, The Patriot, Braveheart, The Green Mile, The Consipiracy Theory, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List... there are just some films and other artforms that cause us to wrestle with reality... to come to grips with it and make choices on how we will then live our lives. I decided before the day came to watch the movie, that I would watch every moment, no matter what visual horrors would be presented. I stayed true to my decision, and it was worth every bit of my own anguish to endure to the end, claiming a prize that was so personal.
