Thanks to pianist and composer Vardan Ovsepian, I'm practicing jazz piano and working to incorporate jazz influences into my songwriting.  My fingers aren't following... yet... but I'm enjoying the experimentation.  Vince Cherico and Barry Olsen got me into some sizzling latin music in summer 2009 and I was able to perform with all three of these talented folks at various times during the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Fairbanks.

During the early winter 2007, I had the blessing to work with Ken Pierce, an amazing guitarist and cellist who was living in Galena for a few short months.  His experience & expertise in the field of music was inspiring and gave me fresh motivation musically.  I did some background vocals on a couple of his songs and he's adding some of his own special sauce to a couple of mine, even though now miles separate us.  He was our guest artist at the 2nd annual RIFF@N*HOOK Music festival in March 2008(www.myspace.com/riffnhookmusicfestival) and I had the honor of performing with him.

5/13/06 - YL Banquet
No one could have expected the ambiance that resulted at the YL Banquet after  my brother David, Diane & I presented several perspectives on life in Galena, and the lives of teens who grow up in villages and end up here.  I performed a few songs I wrote, as well as an Aerosmith tune, a Dave Blok song & a local favorite entitled Visions.  People lined up to speak to us about ministry and how they could be a part of it.  To each person who attended, we gave a demo CD I threw together with a community member here in Galena.  We hooked up some of my limited equipment with his digital recording device and I performed six songs live in an empty church.  The disc turned out surprisingly well, and the second track on it, Fit for the Throne is currently airing on the radio in south central Alaska.  The disc looked good too.

Landslide at Prom

May 6, 2006: I'm so proud of the four teens pictured above.  Three of the students struggled with singing on pitch when we started rehearsing in April, but after the April 22 performance and a few more practices, these four students impressed their peers at prom with solos and unison singing of Stand by Me and Lean on Me.  I'm looking forward to more next year with them.

May 5, 2006
, I performed at the Starlight Cafe with my friend Dave Gonder.  We played all but one of my originals along with Come Together.  I also played a couple songs solo.  Some of the audience members were singing along to my originals and at the end, they wanted more.  Good times!

The concert on April 22, 2006 was a success!  I presented a wide variety of musical stylings, including opera, folk, blues, rock, gospel, praise & worship, patriotic and originals.  Dave Gonder (of Ohio) joined me on Come Together, Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, War Pigs and a couple originals - his electic guitar prowess, along with Jeff Barry's drum skills, had the place rockin'.  There were some technical difficulties, but the performances were terrific and I had a blast!  (Photos of the event by Paul Apfelbeck)

Due to popular demand, I will be planning some house concerts this year; I'll keep you posted.
