Galena Interior Learning Academy Formerly: Project Education Residential School http://gila.galenaalaska.org/
GILA has about 110 students enrolled for regular high school classes as well as vocational programs such as Aviation, Culinary, Automotive and Cosmotology. Stories about our activities at GILA can be found at http://www.alaskaice.org - click on Communities and then click on Galena.
The Alaska Ice website has many other features of interest, including the KIDS These Days publication, whose October issue highlights GILA and its programs on page six. There's even a picture of Karrie making agutuq with some teen residents. An article entitled *GILA Residents Soak Up The Service* wrttien by Karrie is featured under the Galena link. The most recent stories by Karrie are at these sites: http://www.alaskaice.org/material.php?matID=561 and http://www.alaskaice.org/material.php?matID=562. The latter is a link to the article Senses Indulged which is also featured on the AK Ice Homepage.

We're well into the 2006-2007 school year and have activities under our belt like the 2006 Yukon Jamboree. Student community service club Hands & Feet is in full swing, as is Getting Buff with Dan-O, Yoga, Wilderness Hall Singers, Spanish Class.
Local Elder teaches a Hands & Feet member how to quilt for one of the H&F GILA Alumni projects.
2005-2006 School Year For the month of October and part of November, GILA hosted I.D.E.A. students from around the state who came to sample our vocational programs. They brought wonderful, fresh perspectives to us here and dived into activities with other students. We visited the Kopp family for the three Fridays in a row because I.D.E.A students found the Kopp's place to be a free, peaceful home environment where they could interact with community members as well as GILA students while they play games, chat, eat or play music together; they asked to go to the Kopp's as often as could be accomodated. When we returned from the last Friday evening of fun there, we changed our clothes and put on our game faces for an aggressive bout of indoor soccer at the gym. Over twenty students displayed their fancy footwork, head shots, and power plays off the walls until curfew. What a joy it was to see students trying new athletic activities and working to be a team with teens from different walks of life and varying degrees of ability. Look out MLS! Here comes GILA soccer!

One of many Popcorn Parties in Karrie's room (2004-2005)
Karrie played one evening on with the Community Women's Team against the Hawks' 2004-2005 Junior Varsity Squad. I'd say she qualifies for the female Kurt Rambis of the new millenium. Although, Karrie doesn't have fans making a website commemorating her skills and activities of days gone by like he does, surprisingly enough. Oh yeah, and she doesn't have her own action figure like Rambis.

At our first residential hall Open House 2004, I had homemade bread and a variety of teas to share with students that visited my room from all four halls. Jill Kaniut gave me her bread machine along with a tote stuffed to the brim with all the ingredients for wonderful bread. And she was right, the students LOVED having fresh bread!
The Open House was a wonderful time to get to know students from other halls. While in my room, students requested various songs for me to sing and play and I gladly obliged. I miss performing so much, so anytime the students want me to sing them to sleep or play a favorite tune, I'm happy to be their minstrel.
